Negotiation Chapter 1

The Nature of Negotiation


In this chapter the foundation for the thorough and detailed examination of the negotiation process was discussed. There are four key elements of the negotiation process: managing interdependence, engaging in mutual adjustment, creating or claiming value, and managing conflict.

Using Graphics and Power Point for a Leadership Edge


(1)Graphics are used to reinforce a message.

(2) Graphics provide a road map to the structure of the presentation.

(3) Graphics illustrate relationships and concepts visually.

(4) Graphics emphasize the most important ideas.

(5) Graphics maintain and enhance interests

(6) Colors and fonts are important to the total package of the presentation.

When using power point you are able to project your presentation on slides. You are able to change and pick your desired templates, colors, and fonts. You can even add pictures and video, along with your charts.

Chapter 4 Summary

Developing and Delivering Leadership Presentations


When a leader begins to plan out a developed strategy they first need to determine a strategy, analyze their audience, organize and establish their logical structure, and select a medium and delivery method.

The leader should consider using the Three P’s: Plan, Prepare, and Present

There many choices for delivering your presentation. You can stand up with a visual, Use a computer projector, Phone conferencing, or maybe the use of power point. The presentation must have an introduction, body, and, a conclusion.

Chapter 3 Summary

Using Language to Achieve a Leadership Purpose


Leaders spend about 70% of their time communicating to some form of an audience. Leaders use language to influence their intended listener. It is essential for leaders to project a positive tone when speaking or in their writing. To accomplish this task the leader must be confident in all aspects. They must be knowledgeable, assertive, and humble. Having a peaceful tone, style, and mannerism will assist the leader in getting their messages across with little interference.

Creating Leadership Documents


Documents of a business origin fall into two different types:

(1) Correspondences ( e-mails, memos, and letters)
(2) Reports ( proposals, progress reviews, performance reports, and chart packs)

When creating a document the initial opening should begin strongly by quickly stating your main intent or message. Ensure that your documents are organized. When closing your document you should end it just in the same manner as you began, strong and to the point.

When constructing a letter you should do so in a block format and end with the words sincerely.

When constructing a memo it should consist of a date, to, from, and a subject.

Lastly, e-mails are similar to memos.

Developing Leadership Communication Strategy


To become an effective leader you must first establish your clear communication skills. You begin with three general purposes. One is to inform, two is to persuade, and three is to instruct. Most leadership is communication is action oriented. Once you have a purpose you might want to come up with other ideas to express the purpose so that it is clear to your audience. You can use methods such as brainstorming, and idea mapping. Next, you then want to develop a strategy for communicating. You will need to consider the framework and its parts, which are messages, media/forum, timing, and the spokesperson. Remember to ask the questions who, what, why, when, and how.
